Despite our best efforts to be gentle, we recognize that some patients feel severe anxiety
that can be alleviated by some sedation during stressful dental procedures. That is why
we are happy to offer inhalation Nitrous Oxide, or commonly known as “Laughing
gas”.
This form of conscious sedation is safe, has a fast onset, and has no lasting drowsy effects. That means it is fine for you to drive immediately after your appointment. An odourless nitrous oxide gas mixed with oxygen is delivered through breathing apparatus (a mask) that is fitted comfortably over your nose. Within a few minutes of breathing in the gas, most people will have a feeling of relaxation, calmness, and mild euphoria (rather like having a glass of wine...) Laughing is not a common reaction, but we don’t mind if you do! Full recovery of your normal state is achieved within minutes through breathing in pure oxygen.
We advise that patients not have anything to eat 2 hours prior to their appointment. Please be aware that not all insurance plans cover sedation fees, so if you are not sure, we would be happy to assist you by sending a predetermination.
