Cavity Filling Toronto: What you need to know
Some people will have cavities and some will not; which one you are, depends on your teeth and how you take care of them.
For those who do need a filling, there is some information you need to know.
What is a cavity and how do you know if you have one?
A cavity is a tooth that has a spot in it that has begun to rot and decay.
That spot will eventually cause pain when you eat or drink something hot or cold and when you chew.
In order to know if you have a cavity you need to see your dentist regularly and he or she will determine if you have a cavity that needs a filling.
Types of filling
There are several types of filling material.
One is the old silver material (silver amalgam)
The other is a special resin material that is coloured the same colour as a tooth.
Of course, there is also gold and porcelain that can be used.
Which filling last the longest
Silver amalgam will last 10 to 15 years; the composite resin will last 5 to 10 years.
Both have some good points and bad points.
The composite resin can chip easier especially in the molars but they also need less material of the tooth removed since they are bonded to the tooth.
However, composite resin takes on average 20 minutes longer to do than silver amalgam.
Does a filling need different care than my regular teeth?
When it comes to taking care of your fillings, your regular oral hygiene is sufficient.
Also, pay attention to eating fewer hard foods.
