A healthy vibrant smile used to be something some people were just born with. With advances in dental technology, strong, straight pearly-whites are now available to everyone in the form of dental veneers.
Dental veneers are thin, porcelain or composite resin exterior shells that are fitted over your natural teeth. They enhance smiles and correct natural imperfections. They can also be used to fix cavities, whiten teeth permanently, or mend one or more broken or chipped teeth.
So, how do you know if veneers are right for you? First, consult with Dr. Lily Lo at Lawrence Avenue Dental in east Toronto who has experience fitting veneers. You’ll want to know if veneers fit your lifestyle and your desired use and look. Veneers are a permanent commitment. The process requires a dentist who is skilled at shaping and placing the veneers.
Just What is Involved?
Many people ask what the procedure is for getting veneers. It’s fairly straightforward. It involves a diagnosis and treatment plan and preparation and bonding sessions with Lawrence Avenue Dental.
In your diagnosis and treatment appointment, you’ll meet with Dr. Lo and explain what your desire. You might want to fill in a gap or have more uniform and whiter teeth.
Dr. Lo will examine your mouth and take X-rays and impressions. On subsequent appointments, we will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel. This facilitates the application of the veneers. The entire process may take from two to five appointments.
What Veneers Can Do
Veneers are an excellent option for:
- Teeth that are discolored or stained from prescription drug use, such as tetracycline, or fluoride stains, cigarette smoking, or coffee or food stains
- Teeth that have been worn down, or are chipped or broken
- Misaligned or irregularly shaped teeth
- Teeth with gaps between them
- Uneven tooth edges or surfaces
Most patients find veneers look and feel natural. Fitted properly, they do not impede your bite. Veneers are also stain resistant, so you can enjoy your favourite food and drink without worrying about staining your teeth.
An added bonus of veneers is that they are useful in the treatment of enamel abrasion and loss from overaggressive brushing, consumption of acidic food and drinks, and acid reflux.
With normal care and hygiene, veneers can last 15 to 20 years. They do not protect your teeth from decay, so regular dental hygiene appointments and checkups are important.
