White Dental Fillings Versus Silver

The majority of us know what white dental fillings Toronto are, especially, the silver ones and what they are used for.

However, today there are also white dental fillings.

What fillings are made from

The silver or amalgam fillings are made from a mixture of mercury, silver, tin, and copper; all in acceptable safe levels. These fillings are very strong and generally, used in the back of the mouth in the molars.

White dental fillings are made of special coloured resin and glass that resembles the colour of teeth. These are not as strong as the silver or amalgam fillings.

Where are white dental fillings used

These white fillings would typically be found in the front your mouth where they would not be used as harshly as the molars in chewing food.

They would also receive less pressure if you are a teeth grinder or jaw clencher.

Cost of white versus silver

You may be surprised to learn that the white fillings are actually quite affordable; generally running about $30.00 to $45.00 more than the amalgam fillings do per tooth.

White fillings are not noticeable like the silver fillings so people would never know you have cavities.

How long with white fillings last

The white filling will last 8 to 10 years but could last as long as 20 years; it depends on whether you grind your teeth as well as how much wear and tear it receives during chewing your food.

Hard foods and or gum will require more chewing causing wear but that does not mean you have to eat only soft food. As with everything, moderation is a good idea when it comes to hard foods if you want the white filling to last.

Before choosing white dental fillings Toronto speak to your dentist to see what they recommend.
